Trump Is Right About Delta Smelt Causing Water Shortage

The mainstream media has published multiple articles in recent days trying to make President Trump look crazy for blaming the fire in California on the tiny little fish known as Delta Smelt... but Trump is almost always proven to be 100% correct and is usually well informed about every topic he speaks about. This is very refreshing considering that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have no useful knowledge on any topics except for the exact questions they get asked during debates.

A February 12, 2013, article published by KPBS entitled 'Delta Smelt Deaths Means Less Water for Central and Southern California' explained "Too many fish deaths in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta are forcing the California Department of Water Resources to reduce the amount of water pumped to the Central Valley and southern California. The number of protected Delta Smelt killed this year is nearing the annual limit set by the Endangered Species Act. Pumping stations have killed 232 smelt. Rules allow only 305 over the entire year. Mark Corwin with the Department said the deaths illustrate the need for a new system, one that would include $14 billion twin tunnels. So far the department has had to withhold 700-thousand-acre feet of water, enough to supply more than a million households for a year."

There are 15-20 species of smelts in the world. Rainbow Smelt are among the most common and found throughout the Great Lakes and in hundreds of other lakes and rivers throughout the northern U.S. and Canada. Rainbow Smelt have a mild, slightly sweet flavor and a tender texture, which makes them popular for frying or using in dishes like smelt fritters. Delta Smelt, on the other hand, have a less pronounced flavor. They’re often smaller and thinner than Rainbow Smelt, which contribute to a less appealing texture and taste. All 15-20 species of smelts can be fried and eaten much like fried calamari, but since you need to eat a large quantity to feel full, they are more commonly used as bait to catch larger, tastier fish.

The rule where only 305 Delta Smelts are allowed to be killed over an entire year means they are filling very few stomachs and satisfying very few people. Considering how Rainbow Smelts are larger and better textured and there are countless millions of them available in our lakes... it is hard to understand why there is so much fuss over the less appealing Delta Smelt. Will anybody notice if 1 of these species of smelt... the Delta Smelt, disappears? They seem to only exist at the pumping stations that supply water to Southern California... and are used as an excuse to "build new $14 billion twin tunnels" that have no purpose other than enriching the friends of corrupt politicians like Gavin Newsom.

The $14 billion twin tunnels project that was proposed in 2013 to protect the Delta Smelt is about to finally be built, but only as a single tunnel called the Delta Conveyance Project and at a much higher cost of $20.1 billion! On the same exact day of January 7th that California's wildfires erupted... the California Department of Water Resources filed a 43 page "Complaint of Validation" seeking to confirm the validity of the Delta Conveyance Project's Revenue Bonds to pay for this wasteful project that won't be completed until 2044. A December 18, 2013, article in Nature Magazine entitled 'Conservation: The Endangered Species Act at 40' explained, "A conservation policy that counts all species as having equal value can be counterproductive". It gave the example, "ESA policies to preserve a small, unalluring fish known as the Delta Smelt has led to controversial water-use restrictions in California, feeding anti-conservation sentiment."

If diverting flows of water into the Pacific Ocean, rather than to areas like Los Angeles, protects endangered Delta Smelt at the expense of thousands of homes burning down... maybe we shouldn't protect any endangered fish. These aren't cute and cuddly Koalas or another endangered marsupial. We are talking about a type of fish bait and there are many better species of smelts that live elsewhere!
