First Tellurium (CSE: FTEL) is a brand-new company that was conceived to meet rising tellurium demand locally in North America. FTEL has strategically positioned itself to be an integral part of the North American supply chain for solar panels. FTEL is exploring and developing tellurium projects in Colorado and British Columbia.
Tellurium’s primary use is for manufacturing films essential to photovoltaic solar cells. When alloyed with other elements— such as cadmium—tellurium forms a compound that exhibits enhanced electrical conductivity. Therefore, a thin film can efficiently absorb sunlight and convert it into electricity. Tellurium is the second-most utilized solar material in the world, after silicon. Thin-film, cadmium telluride (CdTe) solar panels are preferred for large-scale and utility applications.
FTEL's Klondike Tellurium Property in Colorado is an exceptional tellurium prospect held previously by First Solar Inc., one of the world’s largest solar panel producers. Klondike was considered one of First Solar's top tellurium prospects worldwide. First Solar planned to use Klondike as a potential primary source of tellurium for the company’s cadmium-telluride (CdTe) solar panels. In 2013, First Solar cancelled their tellurium mining initiative.
Surface sampling by First Solar in 2006 found very high tellurium grades of up to 3.3% (33,000 ppm). Tellurium grades at Klondike were the highest encountered in First Solar's nationwide exploration program.
