S&P 500 Share Buybacks See Massive Plunge

S&P 500 share buybacks during 3Q 2016 plunged -12% from the previous quarter to $112.2 billion, the lowest quarter of S&P 500 share buybacks in 3 1/2 years. S&P 500 share buybacks have declined -30.48% over the last two quarters from an 8 1/2 year high in 1Q 2016 of $161.39 billion.

The recent decline in S&P 500 share buybacks is very similar to what occurred in 1Q 2008 when buybacks declined -33.76% over a two quarter period to $113.9 billion from a record high in 3Q 2007 of $171.95 billion. Over the following 12 months, the S&P 500 lost nearly 50% of its value.
